Txt Drive sponsor Bedford Hockey Club’s new U18’s girls academy

Bedford driving school Txt Drive was this weekend unveiled as the new Bedford Hockey Club girls under 18’s main sponsor in a match which they lost against Havering in the England Hockey Under 18’s plate competition.

The academy is a new project for the club this year hoping to smooth the transition between junior and senior hockey at the club and attract more girls to play out of the school environment as well as speeding up the pathway for talented players to progress through the ladies team at the club up to the first team. Under 18’s captain Maya Thrasher is one example of this pathway in action as she is already a key member of the first team squad. 

Over 20 girls train on a weekly basis at Bedford as part of the squad which is overseen by BHC ladies 1s coach Steve Harvey with the sessions delivered by Luke Whatling, a prospective level 2 coach, with the focus being on building up core skills and technical and tactical knowledge.

Chris Deverell, owner of Txt Drive said “It’s great to be able to support the development of young hockey players at Bedford. I think the Txt Drive playing shirts look great and I wish all the girls the best with their hockey this season”.

As part of the partnership Txt Drive has also become the official player sponsor to Ladies 1^st team player Jenna Maclaren. Unfortunately 18 year old defender Jenna is not eligible to play for the u18’s anymore but Chris has offered to help Jenna to learn to drive as she currently commutes to hockey training on public transport from Luton. Jenna is looking forward to getting behind the wheel “We are all grateful to Chris for supporting the younger players at the club and I am looking forward to my driving lessons with him. Once I have passed my test it will be easier for me to attend training and fitness sessions and that in turn will take my game to the next level”

Bedford driving school Txt-Drive is please to announce a deal to sponsor the Bedford Hockey Club’s Under 18s  Girls Academy which will be known as the BHC Txt-Drive Academy.

The new deal will mean that the Girls selected for the BHC Txt-Drive Academy will be wearing the new kit featuring Txt-Drive branding.

The agreement came about following communication via Twitter between Txt-Drive propriator & driving instructor Chris Deverell and Kate Costin of Bedford Hockey Club’s Ladies 1st Team.

Txt-Drive’s Chris Deverell put out a request on Twitter to see if anyone wished to share a minibus from the Kings Of Leon concert in Coventry back to Bedford. This request was answered by Kate Costin (@BedfordHC_L1s on Twitter).

A few months later the new sponsorship deal was discussed & hopefully the deal will be beneficial to both parties.

The new deal also includes official player sponsorship of Jenna Maclaren from Bedford Hockey Club’s Ladies 1st Team.

Adrian Shurmer, of Great Harwood, has this week taken on the job of teaching Manchester City academy players how to drive, having already spent seven years at rivals Manchester United.

Adrian, 69, who served in Accrington’s crime squad before a decade teaching officers how to drive, said: “There’s a huge problem teaching young footballers because they have a lot of aggression and lots of money.

“They’re young lads who want to go fast and the clubs are telling them to get stuck in on the field.

“My job is to give them psychological training on how to deal with situations.

“They might be rich, but they have only got one life and they’re not above the law.”

Although for contract reasons Adrian cannot name the players he has taught, he said several of Manchester United’s first team players have been through his course.

Adrian said he would love to teach high-profile Premier League stars his way of driving.

He said: “These young men are role models and if they are driving well and calmly, then it’s a good example to all their fans.

“It’s very difficult for clubs when someone like Cristiano Ronaldo crashes his Ferrari, then goes home and gets in his Bentley.”

Adrian, who runs Driver Awareness Ltd – which visits schools and workplaces across the country, was approached to start working for Manchester United after club bosses watched one of his demonstrations.

Word then spread about his talks, which he says leave the stars high-fiving him.

He focuses on teaching young players theory before getting behind the wheel.

He said: “It’s all about how you communicate with a driver. If you start talking to footballers about stopping distances and the like, you’ve lost them automatically. So instead I use concepts they are familar with.

“I talk in terms of control and not mouthing off on the pitch or to the ref.

“As a protection driver you don’t trust anyone, you’re always expecting to be attacked. That’s especially relevant for the footballers who drive big 4×4s and wear Rolex watches.”

Adrian’s tips are now contained in his new book Mind How You Go.

David Bushell, of Manchester United Football Club, said: “Adrian stimulates the boys to think that, as in football, the physical and technical are important, but without good habits and awareness, the opportunities for success are less.”

A pregnant woman was so desperate to take her driving test that she completed it whilst in labour – and then drove herself to hospital to deliver her daughter!

Emma French, 20, had four contractions whilst taking her test in Bathgate, West Lothian, Scotland, but was determined to see it through having waited for it since August.

She kept mum about her contractions to both the examiner and her instructor as she got behind the wheel – despite her partner Neil MacFarlane, 21, brother Scott, 22, and mum Rhonda, 44, all urging her to cancel and go to hospital.

After passing, she drove first to her grandparents’ house to tell them her good news, then made her way to St John’s Hospital in Livingston where she was found to be three centimeters dilated. Her baby girl, Eva, was born six hours later.

Warehouse worker Emma said: “Everyone was telling me to go to the hospital but I had waited so long for my driving test that I was determined to do it.

“I can’t wait to tell Eva this story when she’s older, and it’s definitely one for the grandchildren. And one good thing about being in labour that day, it really killed by pre-test nerves.!

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), the UK’s leading road safety charity dedicated to raising driving standards, has warned that skills learned in the driving test are not enough to deal with real-life driving situations.

According to the institute, all drivers start as new drivers and need to build up their confidence on the road and driving alone gradually. Some drivers may like to continue to learn throughout their driving careers, as new advances and road rules are introduced.

A spokesperson for the IAM said: “We believe that there should be greater encouragement for [drivers] to engage in additional learning beyond their driving test.”

She added that this would in turn give responsible drivers a chance to prove their skills and in so doing lower their insurance premiums.

Furthermore, higher costs of car insurance for young drivers could lead to negative effects on road safety, the IAM also warned.

The Txt-Drive pupil then asked what the driving instructor did when they wanted a cigarette.  As a non-smoker, I didn’t really know – but me & my pupil said by the looks of things at the time the pupil learning to drive had to wait in the car while the driving instructor had a smoke!! My pupil then said she wouldn’t like it if she was paying for a driving lesson & then the driving instructor took a couple of smoking breaks during the lesson to have a puff. She said even if the time was added on at the end of the lesson – it would be very inconveinient to keep stopping during a lesson for the driving instructor to have a cigarette. My pupil then went on to explain how the car would stink of smoke once the driving instructor got back into the car.

To be perfectly honest I had never really thought about this!! This could mean that pupils learning to drive with a smoking driving instructor may miss out on roughly 5-20 minutes per lesson (depending on how long the lesson was). This is VALUABLE driving time which pupil’s are PAYING FOR!!! Even if it’s just 5 minutes an hour lost over a period of 47 or 67 hours (average time taken to learn to drive with private practice & without private practice according to figures released by the DSA) a paying customer could lose  nearly 4 HOURS of driving time & upto nearly 6 HOURS of practice!!!

Therefore if you learn with a driving instructor that smokes & they take smoking breaks during your lesson (& don’t add on the extra time at the end) you could be losing out on roughly £84 – £126 (based on £21 per hour prices) of driving tuition!!! You will then more than likely have to pay this extra to get up to the required driving standard to pass your driving test.   

Even driving schools in Bedford which have very attractive introductory prices such as 5 lessons for £55 of 4 hours for £40 etc only need to waste 5 minutes a lesson & over the course of learning to drive you will end up having to pay a large sum of money! What seemed like a good offer at the start may ending up costing more money than you expected!!!

Txt-Drive had to request that the stolent content be removed from the Bedford driving school’s website (we won’t name the driving school or the website at this moment – to save embarassing  them!). A small number of changes were made to the website which was using the stolen Txt-Drive content. However there is still a further 8 sections of text which has been taken from the Txt-Drive website.

Txt-Drive is hoping that the website which has used the stolen content swiftly removes it to prevent further action being taken. Txt-Drive has put alot of time & effort into creating a successful website. I’m sure this other driving school would not steal a Txt-Drive car so why has it stolen the content from the website?

Hopefully this matter can be quickly resolved by the stolen content being removed & it’s own unique content being put on their website.

Certain logos featured on the other driving school’s website (won’t embarass them by naming the driving school…..) have been taken directly from the Txt-Drive website.

In particular, one logo was edited in a way which placed it on a black background – the logo was sourced directly from the DSA & then edited for the Txt-Drive website. These edits would probably not be visible to owner or designer of their website but they are visible to Txt-Drive!!  The unnamed website, of the other driving school, strangely uses the same black background logos – for their navy blue website! Same size logos too….

Also pretty sure they are clearly lying about being a member of an association when they aren’t.

Oh well – we shall see what happens!!
